Managing Spills

It is recommended that your vessel carries your own absorbent pads.

  • Use the emergency stop button.
  • Call for help as required.
  • Tell everyone in the area to put out any other ignition sources – make sure no one starts an engine.
  • Have fire extinguishers ready in case a fire breaks out.
  • Small spills should have absorbent pads placed on the liquid to absorb it.
  • Large fuel spills are extremely dangerous and should be left to professionals.
  • Do not use chemicals or detergents on spills.
  • If a spill is large seek help via the emergency numbers listed but try to contain the spill with absorbent pads and the brooms and mops available in the spill kits.
  • All spills should be reported to Fuel Distributors of WA, if not reported spill kits are unlikely to be replenished. Other users will be unable to respond to future spills, your co-operation in reporting the use of the spill kit would be appreciated.
  • For land-based spills, the priority is avoiding spills entering the water.
  • Any fuel spill to water, throw out boom over the path of spilled product to contain the spill from spreading further, secure boom.
  • Put all used and contaminant products in the large plastic bag available in your spill it which is provided for this purpose.
